HJ-8 Missile System
by duffry of Clan=|DMZ|=
The HJ-8 (Hongjian-8) missile system is the most powerful land based anti-armour weapon in the game (along with it’s Western counterpart the TOW).
Positioned at strategic points throughout most maps the HJ-8 ‘s primary function is for defence against armoured vehicles but its guidance systems mean that it can effectively be used against faster moving light armoured vehicles or even troops.
Mounted on a tripod the HJ-8 is capable of 360-degrees of lateral rotation and can angle vertically to a sufficient extent for most terrain situations. The operator sights through an eyepiece that provides a targeting reticule; once the missile is launched its trajectory can be adjusted in-flight by maintaining the target within this reticule. Armoured vehicles can detect when they are being targeted by the HJ-8 and may attempt to take evasive manoeuvres
The HJ-8’s wire-guided flight system combined with its extreme range make it ideal for destroying targets before they are in a position to engage you but its low hit-points and almost non-existent armour protection make it a dangerous place to stay when the enemy is closer.
In the real world
The PLA’s second-generation anti-tank missile “Hongjian-8” [Red Arrow] was deployed in the late 1980s. This anti-tank missile has a long range and is accurate, dependable and powerful. It can pierce through armours 80mm thick. The front armour of the gun tower of Taiwan’s best M60 tanks is only 110mm thick. The “Hongjian-8E” has a range of four kilometres, and an estimated hit accuracy of over 90 percent. Since it is fitted with tandem warhead, it can pierce through tanks with reactive armour, and has an armour-piercing depth of over 100 millimetres. The “Hongjian-8E” can be carried by infantry soldiers or mounted on various types of vehicles and helicopters. The performance of the “Hongjian-8E” is similar to the “TOW” anti-tank missiles of the US army, and is better than the German and French “Milan” anti-tank missile. 1)
