M4
Details
The M4 is a moderately accurate carbine that comes equipped with a “red dot” low power scope, making it easy to line up medium and long range shots. It does low damage per shot but has a good rate of fire and low recoil in full auto mode, making it an effective weapon in many situations. Created as a lightweight, less expensive alternative to the M16A2, the M4A1 Carbine is much more versatile, but due to its carbine status suffers from a loss of effective range and lower muzzle velocity. Thus, the M4 Carbine has lower lethality but is an improvement over the M16A2 at closer ranges.

In the 'real world'
The M4 Carbine was originally developed by the US government by Colt firearms to replace the M16A2 and M16 guns. It is shorter and lighter than its predecessors and is gas operated, air cooled, magazine fed, selective fire firearm with a collaspible stock. It is used by many US agencies including USMC, Delta force, and the Navy SEALS for close to mid range urban combat and a variant is also used by the British SAS. The Carbine uses 5.56 mm ammo and has a 30 round magazine capacity. It has a fully automatic and single shot firing mode and can be fitted with night vision, laser sights, bipods and even the M203 grenade launcher.
